Wilhelm Scheruebl
2026
Wilhelm Scheruebl is a sculptor based in Radstadt.
He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Bruno Gironcoli.
Wilhelm Scheruebl deals with the structures and processes of the natural that can be found everywhere - self-organized structures of construction and transformation that are just as visible in interpersonal networks as in the cell structure of a stem. Formation processes are balances that hover between order and chaos.
At the beginning of his reflections, Scheruebl places light, which sets the dynamics of becoming in motion in the interplay of light and dark. What we understand by nature, says the philosopher and sociologist Georg Simmel in his "Philosophy of Landscape" (1913), is the "endless coherence of things, the uninterrupted birth and destruction of forms, the flowing unity of events". Matter, every substance, is in a constant state of transformation. The cycles of nature, from the change of seasons to the certain end of our physical existence, make this clear. The plant is an example of this change, the constant becoming. It represents the cycle - inscribed in the course of a year - from seedling to blossom to seed formation, until new earth is formed from the dead plant material.
Quote of the artist on the beginning of the Minusaquarelle.
«A group of works that has occupied me since 1993 – what is it all about? Since the early 1980s, I have repeatedly traveled up to the mountains around Obertauern and the Dachstein in winter to paint them. I was fascinated by the rapid changes in the shadows in the wintery rocky landscapes. The harsh and rapid changes in light and shadow required extremely fast painting without reflection – especially with large formats. Once, when I hadn't prepared any canvases and this light still drew me up into the mountains, I tried using watercolors. In the cold, the watery solution froze and created ice crystals on the paper. I was fascinated. This was followed by many series of experiments with different colors and creative approaches. Over time, however, I became convinced by the monochrome works, with a cold color palette, which allowed the crystallizations to be captured most convincingly. For my understanding of the world and humanity, it is appealing when the person/artist takes a back seat and does not try to control everything. The Minusaquarelle are captured moments/movements detached from time. Triggered by a conscious artistic act, but open in their aesthetic result.»
