Mostaff Muchawaya, b. 1981 in Nyazura, Manicaland, Zimbabwe, studied at the National Gallery School of Visual Art and Design from 2002 to 2003. He now lives and works in Harare.
Since 2017, works by Mostaff Muchawaya have been part of the WhiteSpaceBlackBox collection. The first work by this artist ever exhibited on the European continent was shown at WhiteSpaceBlackBox back in 2018.
"Muchawayaâs portraits are refreshingly free of entitlement, or any self-justification. Rather, they haunt our peripheral vision, they will not be contained or mastered. Because they prefer the limits of cognition, the far reaches of taste, because in this world in which we find it difficult to digest the state of play all about, the terrible unease we feel â they are artworks which have deliberately and smartly resistant to gluttony, or easy consumption."
